Variation in Hematological Indices, Oxidative Stress, and Immune Function Among Male Song Sparrows From Rural and Low-Density Urban Habitats

چکیده
A central theme in the field of ecology is understanding how environmental variables influence a species’ distribution. In last 20 years, there has been particular attention given to adaptive physiological traits that allow some species persist urban environments. However, no clear consensus on urbanization influences physiology, and it unclear whether differences birds are directly linked adverse outcomes or representative adaptively responding novel variables. Moreover, though low-density suburban development fastest advancing form urbanization, most studies have focused animals inhabiting high intensity habitats. this study, we measured suite reflect condition immune function male song sparrows ( Melospiza melodia ) from rural Specifically, hematological indices [packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular concentration (MCHC)], circulating glutathione (total, reduced, oxidized), oxidative damage (d-ROM concentration), antioxidant capacity, components innate system [bacteria killing ability (BKA), white blood counts]. We also whole-animal health, including body (scaled mass index length) furcular fat. Song environments exhibited lower MCHC, but higher fat scores. Additionally, had heterophil counts lymphocyte counts, were heterophil:lymphocyte ratio BKA between birds. PCV, concentrations, did not differ sparrows. Overall, exhibit responses suggestive outcomes. Rather, evidence habitats phenotypic energy storage metabolic demand, which may be related behavioral previously observed these populations. Furthermore, study highlights need for measuring multiple markers physiology across different types accurately assess effects wildlife.

Two Neural Measures Differ between Urban and Rural Song Sparrows after Conspecific Song Playback
Urbanization is a critical form of environmental change that can affect the physiology and behavior of wild animals and, notably, birds. One behavioral difference between birds living in urban and rural habitats is that urban males show elevated boldness or territorial aggression in response to simulated social challenge. This pattern has been described in several populations of song sparrow, M...
متن کاملStress, song and survival in sparrows.
The stress response--increases in circulating glucocorticoids following a stressor--is typically considered adaptive, but few studies address the fitness consequences of individual variation in stress response. Generally, due to negative consequences of prolonged elevation of glucocorticoids, animals should have a transient stress response just sufficient to cope with the stressor. In rodents, ...
متن کاملThe development of within-song type variation in song sparrows.
We investigated the development of within-song type variation in song sparrows, Melospiza melodia, with two experiments designed to determine how exposure to within-type variation influences the song-learning process and whether within-type variation itself is a learned trait. In the first experiment, we compared learning between two groups of males, one group tutored exclusively with song mode...
متن کاملSpatial movements and social networks in juvenile male song sparrows.
The time between fledging and breeding is a critical period in songbird ontogeny, but the behavior of young songbirds in the wild is relatively unstudied. The types of social relationships juveniles form with other individuals can provide insight into the process through which they learn complex behaviors crucial for survival, territory establishment, and mate attraction. We used radio telemetr...
متن کاملEffects of larval density on hematological stress indices in salamanders.
In animals with complex life cycles, the quality of juvenile environments is important in shaping the longer-term fitness of individuals. Larval density is a major factor governing quality of larval environments in amphibians, with high densities leading to reduced growth rates, smaller size at metamorphosis, and potentially long-lasting postmetamorphic effects. A little-studied effect of larva...
